Prof Stephens was appointed to the Mater, Cappagh and the Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street in 1989 following an appointment in 1987 as Lecturer to the University of Hong Kong studying paediatric orthopaedic surgery. In 1988 he was Clinical Fellow in Foot & Ankle Surgery in Cincinnati, USA. Since then he has developed the subspecialty of foot and ankle surgery with colleagues now appointed around the country.
He is Past President of the Irish Orthopaedic Association and the European Foot & Ankle Society and is currently President of the Irish Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society.
He was recently appointed Associate Professor in University College Dublin. In 2012 he ceased public practice in the Mater and Cappagh Hospitals but has continued his voluntary clinic in the Central Remedial Clinic and is honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon to the Children’s University Hospital, Temple Street
