Dr Aftab Jan is a UCD Assistant Clinical Professor and Cardiologist specialising in interventional cardiology. Dr Jan undertook cardiology training in Ireland by completing a 2-year cardiology research fellowship in University College Dublin focusing on advanced heart failure studies leading to several publications in peer reviewed journals. He completed a 4-year clinical training program in both general and interventional cardiology in two leading Irish hospitals, St. Vincent’s University Hospital Dublin and St. James’s University Hospital Dublin. He also obtained specialist training in General Internal Medicine with the Royal College of Physicians Ireland, awarded specialist status in cardiology & general internal medicine and is on the Medical Council’s specialist register since 2010.
Dr Jan undertook a fellowship program in cardiac intervention in Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital in 2013, a leading, standalone cardiac intervention center in the UK, learning complex cardiac interventional skills with highly skilled operators and key opinion leaders in the field. He was involved in several major practice changing clinical trials during his training. After completing fellowship in interventional cardiology, he was appointed Consultant Interventional Cardiologist in Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust and Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust UK in 2014, where he was also the cardiology research lead and principal investigator on several cardiology trials. He was actively involved in the Royal College of Physicians UK undergraduate and post graduate clinical teaching programs.
Dr Jan returned to Ireland in 2017 and has been working as an interventional Cardiologist in Beacon Hospital. He is also specialist research director in Cardiology in Beacon Hospital Research Institute. Based on his clinical, teaching and research experience, he was awarded assistant clinical professorship in medicine and medical specialties by University College Dublin in 2021.
Dr Jan manages all aspects of adult Cardiology, and his primary interest is prevention, diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease, complex coronary angioplasty, chronic total occlusion angioplasty and cardiac imaging.
