New Stroke Prevention Procedure
One of the newer procedures we are able to offer is a stroke prevention procedure called Left Atrial Appendage Clipping or LAA CLipping. This procedure significantly reduces the risk of stroke in patients with Atrial Fibrillation. This minimally invasive and innovative procedure is carried out by Consultant Thoracic Surgeon, Ms Donna Eaton, and is an alternative to long term pharmacological treatment for patients who are unable to tolerate certain drugs such as warfarin or other anticoagulants. Studies so far have shown the procedure to have a 98% success rate.
Congenital Heart Disease Clinic
Our new Congenital Heart Disease Clinic led by Prof Kevin Walsh, sees patients from the age of 16 years who have been diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease. Prof Walsh recognised that many patients once leaving the paediatric system can fall through the cracks for follow up on issues relating to their congenital heart disease diagnosis. Dr Walsh has set up this clinic in order to offer life long specialised support to those patients with congenital heart disease.
Dr Orla Franklin, Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist, holds regular clinics in our Beacon for Kids Out Patient Department. Appointments with Dr Franklin require GP referral. For further information on Dr Franklin’s clinics please contact Beacon for Kids on 01 650 4665.
