Extracranial Radiosurgery Programme
Our SBRT programme has been operational since 2008. Beacon Hospital is the only cancer centre in Ireland able to deliver this treatment, using the Trilogy TX linear accelerator.
SBRT can be used for the treatment of primary or oligometastatic cancers:
• Primary early lung cancer in patients not suitable for surgery – results similar to surgery in terms of control of disease and survival
• Metastatic disease to the lung, liver, adrenals, spine- usually if less than 5 lesions, size less 3cm and disease controlled outside the SRS/SBRT target
• On-going studies for its use in patients with pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer (not for use in current practice outside clinical trials)
Note: Metastatic disease = disease which spread from the area where the cancer was initially diagnosed (e.g. colon, rectum, lung) to other organs (lung, brain, adrenal glands, liver)
