SINUSITIS EUSTACHIAN TUBE DYSFUNCTION

Beacon Hospital is the first centre in Ireland to offer Balloon Dilatation Technology for the treatment of these symptoms. Sinus issues are treated with a procedure called Balloon Sinuplasty, while Ear problems can be helped with Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty.

SURGEON

The balloon procedures are being offered by Ms Deirdre Fitzgerald FRCSI (ORL-HNS), Consultant Ear, Nose, Throat & Facial Plastic Surgeon at the Beacon Hospital, who is spearheading the new treatments in Ireland, having previously used them extensively while working in London.

PROCEDURE

These procedures do not require any incisions, and can be carried out under either local or general anaesthetic. The patient can go home the same day. The surgeon uses a camera or endoscope to look at the Sinus or Eustachian Tube openings inside the nose. A special wire catheter is carefully placed at the sinus opening or into the Eustachian Tube, and when in the correct position, the medical balloon is inflated under high pressure. This dilates the sinus opening, allowing better drainage and ventilation of the sinus, thereby reducing symptoms. When the Eustachian Tube is dilated it also allows better air flow and pressure equalisation of the middle ear, thus reducing the symptoms.

PATIENT PREFERRED OPTION

  • With Eustachian Tuboplasty, no need to water-proof ears as with conventional grommet surgery
