Sustainability
Sustainability at Beacon Hospital
At Beacon Hospital we recognise that caring for our patients is interlinked with caring for the world around us. The health of our planet and our environment directly influences the health and wellbeing of our communities.
Sustainability at Beacon Hospital means delivering the highest standards of patient care while actively working to both reduce our environmental impact and support our social community.
Across the hospital, we are engaged in a range of projects and initiatives to minimise our carbon footprint, strengthen our social responsibility and promote a healthier, more sustainable future.
Here are some of our Sustainability Initiatives:
Sustainability Committee
Beacon Hospital have established a Sustainability Committee, chaired by our Head of Sustainability. The Committee meets monthly to set priorities, monitor progress and guide the implementation of sustainability projects across the hospital.
Sustainability Training
We recognise that the key to embedding sustainability throughout the hospital is education. We have developed sustainability training for all staff in order to raise awareness and highlight areas for improvement.
Sustainability Champions Network
In 2025, the Sustainability Committee launched a Sustainability Champions Network for all staff members across the hospital to share their ideas and potential areas for improvement.
Biosystems Reusable Containers
In 2023, Beacon Hospital switched to using reusable biosystems sharps bins. Previously, the 30.2ltr and 7.5ltr sharps containers were shredded and sterilised as healthcare risk waste after use.
Now, each bin can stay in circulation for 600 uses as opposed to being used just once. Since 2023, we have diverted 15,153 containers from ending up in healthcare risk waste.
ScrubEX Machine
In 2024, Beacon Hospital introduced a ScrubEx Machine to promote responsible use of hospital scrubs. The system allocates each staff member a set number of scrubs through a credit-based system, ensuring each set is returned before a new set us issued. This system encourages more mindful scrub use and reduces the number of new scrub sets required.
HaPPE Aprons
In our Catering Department, our team now use HaPPE Aprons. These aprons decompose in just 5 weeks compared to previous aprons which took 50 years.

EcoMerit Certification
At Beacon Hospital we are proud to have our EcoMerit Certification upheld since 2021. This certification enhances our operational performance and ensures the hospital continues to align with current and emerging compliance requirements.
Gender Pay Gap Report
Each year Beacon Hospital produces a Gender Pay Gap Report. We continue to review and improve our policies and procedures to enhance fairness and equity for employees at all levels in the organisation.

Sponsorship of Kilmacud Crokes
Since 2022, Beacon Hospital has been proud Club Sponsor of Kilmacud Crokes GAA Club. Together Beacon Hospital and Kilmacud Crokes are passionate about physical health, teamwork and the wellbeing of our community’s hearts and minds.
