Beacon Hospital’s Vascular Department is comprised of our Vascular Diagnostics Unit and our Surgical Vascular Services. Our Team includes our Chief Vascular Physiologist and 5 Consultant Vascular Surgeons backed by the full services of Beacon Hospital. We are now offering a Direct Access Vascular Diagnostics Unit where GP’s can refer their patients in directly for non invasive ultrasonic vascular imaging.
Beacon Hospital’s Vascular Department offers the latest in both Non-Invasive Diagnostics and in Surgical Interventions. Our Vascular Diagnostics Unit was set up in 2011 and is located in the renowned Beacon Hospital Radiology Department. Our Team consists of our Chief Vascular Physiologist and 5 Consultant Vascular Surgeons. GP’s can now avail of our Direct Access service for their patients in order to get superior quality non-invasive ultrasonic vascular imaging carried out and comprehensive reporting back to assist in their diagnosis.
Beacon Hospital’s Theatre Department is constantly evolving and ensures that the latest equipment and technologies are available to our Consultant Surgeons in performing a wide range of vascular surgeries.
Our Direct Access Vascular Diagnostics Unit (VDU) offers non-invasive ultrasonic imaging to patients upon receipt of a GP referral. Patients will be met with and assessed by our Chief Vascular Physiologist who will carry out the scanning and devise a comprehensive and in depth report for the GP to assist in diagnostics of the following conditions:
- Varicose Vein Mapping
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Carotid and Vertebral Artery
- Peripheral Arterial Disease
- Aortic Aneurysm Screening
Procedures are covered on most private health insurance plans.

Chief Vascular Physiologist
Nuala McMahon, Chief Vascular Physiologist, has been a member of the Beacon Hospital Team since 2011 when she joined us to set up the Vascular Diagnostics Unit. Nuala has been an accredited Vascular Physiologist since 1996 and has over 20 years experience in vascular imaging gained in both the public and private settings. Nuala also has a wealth of experience in research, in teaching (vascular diagnostic imagining) and in Theatre, where she worked on Venous Laser Ablation.
