New Prostate Cancer Treatment: Focal Therapy

First Cases in Ireland of Focal Therapy, a new Treatment for Prostate Cancer, successfully completed at Beacon Hospital.
Mr Mohammud Shakeel Inder, Consultant Urological Surgeon, successfully completed the first cases in Ireland of a new non-invasive treatment for prostate cancer, Focal Therapy.
Focal Therapy targets the affected area with high intensity focused ultrasound energy (HIFU). The delivery of HIFU produces instant cell death through a rapid rise in intracellular temperature. It is a minimally invasive treatment that does not impact surrounding cells, tissues or organs. This is an exciting development benefiting patients, as this decreases risks such as erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. It also gives patients the highest possible chance to preserve ejaculation post-treatment compared to traditional treatments such as invasive surgery or radiotherapy.
Prostate Cancer is currently the most common form of cancer in men in Ireland, with approximate 4,000 men affected annually. Mr Inder stresses it is vital that new technologies and treatments are continuedly introduced to provide increased functional outcomes. He says that with this treatment “patients can expect less downtime and a better quality of life without debilitating long-term side effects.”
Congratulations to Mr Mohammud Shakeel Inder and the Theatre team on this landmark occasion! We are proud to continue delivering pioneering care to our patients in Beacon Hospital.
This is Modern Medicine.
