Beacon Hospital Opens Ireland’s First Neurovascular Hybrid Theatre in a Private Hospital.

Beacon Hospital has officially announced the completion of the first procedure in our new neurovascular hybrid theatre which is the first dedicated theatre of its kind in a private hospital in Ireland. The first procedures were carried out by Consultant Neurosurgeon, Professor Mohsen Javadpour. The 86m² new theatre has been specifically designed for complex neurovascular procedures and incorporates cutting-edge imaging technology that allows surgeons to obtain high-resolution imagery during surgery without moving the patient from the operating table.

About the Theatre

At the heart of the facility is the ARTIS pheno. This advanced robotic imaging system works seamlessly with a specially designed Baxter TS7500 operating table to produce high resolution 2D and 3D imaging intra operatively. The two technologies communicate automatically, enabling the robotic angiography system to position itself precisely when imaging is required, providing surgeons with immediate access to critical information throughout the procedure.

Traditionally, patients undergoing surgery on blood vessel abnormalities of the brain (such as brain aneurysms and AVMs) require an initial operation, followed by an angiogram a few days after the procedure to assess the outcome. In some cases, patients would then need to return to theatre for a subsequent operation based on the angiogram findings. The new integrated technology allows surgeons to obtain angiograms and assess outcomes in real time during the initial procedure, meaning treatment that previously required multiple operations can now often be completed in a single surgical session.

 

Benefits of the New Theatre 

As a result, patients benefit from fewer procedures under anaesthetic, reduced disruption to their recovery and a lower risk of complications associated with multiple surgeries, including infection. The approach also lessens the physical, emotional and psychological burden on patients and their families by eliminating the need to undergo repeat operations wherever possible.

In addition, the ARTIS pheno can be used to obtain high-quality CT scan like images during complex neurosurgical operations, enabling surgeons to detect and manage intraoperative complications immediately. By allowing corrective action before the patient leaves the operating theatre, it improves surgical safety and reduces postoperative complications.
