Spring 2023 GP Study Day: Hot Topics for General Practice

On Saturday 11th March, we held our Spring 2023 GP Study Day on Hot Topics for General Practice. Our Chair for the day was Prof Seamus Linnane. Prof Linnane is a Consultant in General and Respiratory Medicine, and Deputy Medical Director of Beacon Hospital.

Our Spring 2023 GP Study Day kicked off with a presentation by Dr Patrick Hayden, on An Abnormal FBC, Interpreting the Results & When to Refer. Dr Patrick Hayden is a Consultant Haematologist here in Beacon Hospital.

Assoc Prof Anhar Hassan, Consultant Neurologist, opened our first session sharing her Clinical Pearls in Headache for the General Practitioner. Dr Oxana Hughes and Dr Keith Johnston, Consultant Gynaecologists in our Women’s Centre, gave a great presentation on Abnormal and Postcoital Bleeding. Dr Suzanne Meenan, Clinical Psychologist focused on our GPs, reminding us all to mind their own mental health and self-care.

Our first session ended with a panel discussion Prof Seamus Linnane, Dr Eddy Ferrufino-Rivera Consultant in General and Respiratory Medicine, and Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist Jane Dickson. They spoke on the value of a Team Based Approach to Complex Medical Presentations!

Following on from a great first session, our second session contained four more brilliant presentations. Dr Mary Ryan, Consultant Endocrinologist in Beacon Limerick, started us back after the coffee break speaking on Managing Diabetes in Primary Care. Dr Niall Breslin Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist and Dr Barry Hall Consultant Gastroenterologist gave a helpful presentation detailing Common Cases in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Ms Yasmin Ismail is a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon, presented on The Plastic Surgery Clinic.

Finally, Prof David Kane, Consultant Rheumatologist, spoke on all things Hocus POCUS – Solving Cases with Point Of Care UltraSound!
