Annual GP Study Day 2024: Cancer MDT Between Consultant & GP

Our Annual GP Study Day 2024 took place in UCD O’Reilly Hall on Saturday 20th January. Worth 6.5 CPD Points and 1 Day GMS Study Leave, our Study Day was a “Cancer MDT Between Consultant & GP”. Prof Jenny Westrup, Consultant Medical Oncologist joined us as our Chair for the day.

The morning started with a Masterclass & Panel Discussion with Prof Jenny Westrup, Dr Rozana Rahman, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Martina Farley, Head of Oncology Services. Our Panel was titled Cancer Projections & Early Detections; Essential Information for General Practitioners.

Next, Mr Terry Boyle, Consultant Breast Surgeon and Hazel Keane, Breast Care Programme Manager discussed MDT Management of Breast Cancer Including Case Studies. Then Prof Ray McDermott, Consultant Medical Oncologist spoke on Advances in Prostate Cancer Treatment. Aoife McGovern, Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist and Margaret Coleman, Oncology Research CNM shared updates on the Benefits of Exercise During Cancer Treatment.

Our first session ended with Dr Mark Howard, Consultant in Palliative Medicine giving a presentation on Managing Cancer Pain in Primary Care.

Prof Reza Kalbassi, Consultant in Colorectal Surgery and Endoscopy Clinical Lead, began our second session. He was joined by a patient for a case study and insightful discussion. Dr Lisa Prior, Consultant Medical Oncologist spoke on Lung Cancer; Screening, Diagnostics & Referrals. Dr Siobhra O’Sullivan, Consultant Radiation Oncologist gave an update on Radiotherapy for treatment of skin cancer.

Finally, we had a great Cancer MDT Panel with Prof Jenny Westrup, Dr Siobhra O’Sullivan and Dr Patrick Hayden, Consultant Haematologist. They discussed both case studies and learnings.
