Role of Physiotherapy in Intensive Care and Cardiothoracics and Surgical Ward

Our highly qualified physiotherapy team are experts in the management of patients in both the intensive care setting, and the cardiothoracic and surgical ward setting. Following a thorough assessment, we will work with you to create an individualised treatment programme, which will be reviewed, and progressed as appropriate. We always aim to return to you to your baseline level of functioning, and will provide you with an exercise programme which you can use to continue to improve yourself after discharge.

  • Post Operative Gastrointestincal Surgery- (colectomies, laparotomies)
  • Post Operative Genitourinary Surgery- (prostate surgeries, hysterectomies)
  • Post Operative Neurosurgery- (craniotomies, back/neck surgeies)
  • Post Operative Lung Surgery (Video Assisted Thorascopic Surgery)
  • Respiratory Tract Infections
  • Deconditioning post illness
  • Decreased Mobility
  • Decreased Balance

  • Intensive Care Unit respiratory care assessment and management
  • Pre and post operative respiratory care assessments and management
  • Airway clearance techniques
  • Post operative functional retraining
  • Exercise prescription for the elderly
  • Exercise prescription in cardiac and pulmonary patients
  • Balance retraining exercise prescription

How to access the service:

Should you require any physiotherapy intervention, your consultant can refer you to the physiotherapist during your inpatient stay  

Cost:

The cost of your inpatient physiotherapy is included in your health insurance package of care for your stay.
