Beacon Hospital 2026 Annual GP Study Day – 24th January

2026 Annual GP Study Day

Our 2026 Annual GP Study Day took place in UCD O’Reilly Hall on Saturday 24th January. A mixed topic event the day included presentations on Cardiology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, Urology and Endocrinology. It was a hybrid event and worth 6.5 CPD Points and 1 Day GMS Study Leave.

The early morning session was chaired by Prof David Burke, Director of Cardiology and Consultant Cardiologist, and featured a lively Cardiology Discussion Panel. Our panel included Prof Jonathan Lyne, Director of Cardiac EP, Prof Kevin P Walsh, Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Deirdre Waterhouse, Consultant Cardiologist, Niamh Dillane, Chartered Physiotherapist, and Becky McDonnell, Cardiac Rehab and Heart Failure CNS. Together, the panel explored practical insights and shared expertise from across cardiac care.

We were also delighted to hear from Michael Cullen, CEO, who gave an update on Beacon Hospital. He reflected on key developments from 2025 and progress planned for 2026, including our major eight-storey hospital expansion.

Session One opened with Prof Mohsen Javadpour, Consultant Neurosurgeon, who shared expert insights on neurosurgical interventions for trigeminal neuralgia. Ms Tafadzwa Mandiwanza, Consultant Neurosurgeon, followed with an informative presentation on normal pressure hydrocephalus, before Mr Kieron Sweeney, Consultant Neurosurgeon, explored the clinical approach to incidental findings on MRI scans. We then heard from Dr Alan O’Hare, Consultant Interventional Neuroradiologist, who discussed imaging in conductive hearing loss. Our four Neuro Consultants then hosted a fascinating group Q&A.

Orthopaedics took centre stage next with Mr Maurice Neligan, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, presenting on advances in robotic surgery, followed by Prof Joe Queally, Consultant Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgeon, who spoke on optimising hip and knee replacement outcomes in patients with co-morbidities.

The session concluded with rheumatology updates from Dr Catherine Hughes, Consultant Rheumatologist, who examined psoriatic arthritis, and Dr Javaneh Lyons, Consultant Rheumatologist, who delivered a practical osteoporosis update for GPs.

Chairing our first and second session was Prof Seamus Linnane, Deputy Medical Director at Beacon Hospital and Consultant in Respiratory & GIM.
