First in Ireland and UK to use New Radiotherapy Technology

Beacon Hospital is first in Ireland and the UK, and fifth in Europe to use new Radiotherapy Technology RapidArc Dynamic

Beacon Hospital is the first hospital in Ireland and the UK to have delivered radiotherapy treatment with the new RapidArc Dynamic technology from Varian in their Radiotherapy department.

RapidArc Dynamic (RAD) is a new planning and treatment technology which delivers a reduced dose to healthy tissue thus reducing side effects. Varian released this technology earlier in 2025 and Beacon Hospital is the first hospital in Ireland to have RAD technology with our Varian Truebeam.

Beacon Hospital opened Ireland’s most advanced Radiotherapy system, the Varian Truebeam Hypersight in August 2025. This system includes advanced features including Hypersight, HyperArc and RapidArc Dynamic (RAD).

What is RapidArc Dynamic?

RapidArc Dynamic provides a number of advantages over other radiotherapy treatment delivery that is more commonly used. RAD technology includes complex computer algorithms for modelling the radiation delivery to each patient. RAD allows for a more conformal radiation dose distribution to the tumour, which reduces the dose to surrounding healthy tissue and gives the ability to increase the dose to the tumour.

The improved treatment delivery technique offers greater efficiency and can deliver treatment plans in minutes as opposed to hours with previous older technology. A reduced treatment time also reduces the chance of the patient moving. This results in more precise treatment delivery to the tumour when combined with the HyperSight technology on the Varian Truebeam which yields a clearer image of the tumour during treatment.

Together the improved treatment planning and delivery of RAD enables our Radiotherapy Team to deliver as high a dose as possible to the tumour while reducing the impact to the surrounding healthy tissue as much as possible.

Continuing to Offer World-Class Radiotherapy Treatment at Beacon Hospital

In addition to being the first in Ireland and the UK use this technology, Beacon Hospital are only the 5^th hospital in Europe to do so. We will be working with a consortium of European Centres to maximise the benefit of this technology.
