New Microscopic Glaucoma Procedure

Did you know there are approximately a quarter of a million people in Ireland with glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a progressive eye disease, which can lead to blindness if left untreated. It is the second leading cause of blindness in Ireland and around the world.

Traditionally glaucoma has been treated through daily eye drops for the remainder of one’s life. However a new microscopic treatment, iStent, has been developed following which 72% of patients no longer needed to take glaucoma medication after 12 months.

This is a new procedure, and Mr Graeme Rogers, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Beacon Hospital, has now performed the first 20 of these procedures for glaucoma in Beacon Hospital. This procedure is not widely available in Ireland, but is part of the comprehensive care for glaucoma at Dublin Ophthalmic in Beacon Hospital.
