Dr Grant Discusses Severe Period Pain in Teenagers

Is your teen suffering from severe period pain? A worried parent reached out to Dr Grant this week with concerns about their daughter’s severe period pain each month. They are concerned due to how much pain she is in each month when she is only 13 years old.

The medical term for painful, crampy periods is dysmenorrhoea. Dr Grant explains that treatment of dysmenorrhoea should allow enough pain relief so that she can perform the majority, if not all of her daily activities during her period.

Dr Grant discusses the most common symptoms and the steps to managing dysmenorrhoea. As the patient in this instance has only had her period for 6 months, Dr Grant recommends she seek referral from her GP.

Each week, Dr Jennifer Grant, Physician at Beacon HealthCheck answers your questions each week on Independent.ie.
