Beacon Brain Institute to be Developed with €30 Million Investment

Beacon Hospital will be the only private hospital to offer a full range of neuroscience services at Beacon Brain Institute.

Beacon Hospital are delighted to announce a €30 million investment into the neurosurgical and neuroscience services. This investment will develop a state-of-the-art neuroscience centre Beacon Brain Institute. This new Institute will mean Beacon Hospital is Ireland’s only private hospital to offer the complete Neurosciences services including Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neurophysiology, Diagnostic Neuroradiology, Interventional neuroradiology and Neuro-oncology including stereotactic radiosurgery.

This investment in Neuroscience services is in addition to the €75 million capital investment programme already underway with the significant expansion of the hospital on the former site of the Beacon Hotel. This expansion will lead to the addition of 70 new beds, a new Emergency Department and enhanced cancer care facilities.

Prof Mohsen Javadpour to lead Beacon Brain Institute

Beacon Brain Institute will be headed up by our own Prof Mohsen Javadpour, Consultant Neurosurgeon. Speaking on the announcement Professor Mohsen Javadpour said “As you can imagine the treatment of brain conditions such as Brain tumours are exceptionally time sensitive, so this investment by Beacon Hospital to open a dedicated Brain Institute will dramatically increase the number of patients that can be treated and result in better outcomes.

We are fortunate to have an incredibly distinguished and talented team of neurosurgical and neuroscience consultants and nurses working here at Beacon Hospital. I’m proud to be leading a team that’s setting new standards and capabilities for neuroscience treatment in the country.

From my own surgical perspective, it will be hugely beneficial to work with the very latest in technology in particular the ability to take real time MRI images of the surgical site during open brain surgery.”

Michael Cullen, CEO

Michael Cullen, CEO of Beacon Hospital said: “This investment reflects Beacon Hospital’s commitment to providing world-class care and bringing the latest technologies to patients in Ireland. While Beacon already provides complex brain surgery, our new Institute will set a new benchmark for the delivery of neuroscience services in the country and support the ever-growing demand for these types of services.

We are equally delighted to have Professor Javadpour to lead the Beacon Brain Institute. He is a world leader in the neurosciences and neurovascular disciplines, and his expertise and experience has greatly informed the development of the Institute”, he added.

About Beacon Brain Institute

Over the next two years this significant investment will allow the development of a dedicated biplane neuro-interventional radiology suite and a hybrid biplane neurovascular operating theatre. These will allow for the most advanced diagnostics and treatment of all types of blood vessel abnormalities in the brain (such as aneurysms), as well as cutting-edge treatment of stroke.

Beacon Brain Institute will also include the addition of a dedicated neurosurgical operating theatre with intraoperative MRI which will enable surgeons to take detailed images of the brain during the procedure. This improves patient outcomes as it allows for real time visualisation of the operating site, yielding more precise removal of tumours and reduces the need for revision surgery. Real time imaging also helps to avoid critical motor and language areas of the brain which can shift during surgery. Beacon Hospital will be the first adult hospital in Ireland to have a Neurosurgical Operating Theatre with intraoperative MRI.

The new Brain Institute will also have access to a brand-new Varian Edge with stereotactic radiosurgery capability. The investment includes advanced AI-powered software by BrainLab which allows accurate automatic targeting of brain tumours. This is the most advanced radiotherapy machine in Ireland – offering a non-invasive cancer treatment using extreme precision to target and destroy tumours fast and more effectively. This will allow for accurate destruction of brain tumours without the need for open brain surgery.

Beacon Hospital is already an established centre of excellence for brain surgery – over 500 brain surgeries have already been carried out at the hospital, including surgery for complex Brain Tumours and Aneurysms. Our expert neurologists also provide treatment for Stroke, Epilepsy, Migraine, Sleep Disorders, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia. The new Beacon Brain Institute will have the capacity to treat approximately 10,000 patients annually.

Currently 1 in 50 people have brain aneurysms. If an aneurysm ruptures it causes bleeding in the brain which is fatal in one third of cases. Brain tumours are amongst the most aggressive cancers in the body. Many more develop secondary brain tumours (metastases – i.e. cancer spread to the brain from another part of the body).
