Dr Jennifer Grant Discusses HPV on Independent.ie
Dr Grant, Physician at Beacon HealthCheck, discusses the HPV virus (human papillomavirus). This week, a patient asks Dr Grant for more information on HPV after it was found she had HPV after a smear test. In this patient’s case there were no abnormal cells found.
There are over 200 types of HPV that infect humans and approximately 15 of these are carcinogenic. For this patient, having HPV but no abnormal cells mean that she is in a higher risk category for now, and will need another smear test in 12 months time which is sooner than the usual of 3-5 years.
Most forms of HPV are cleared by a healthy immune system within 18 months.
