Frequently Asked Questions

At Beacon Bariatric & Obesity Centre, we provide expert, compassionate care for people living with obesity.

We recognise that obesity is a complex disease requiring more than just surgery.

Our specialist team offers minimally invasive and robotic-assisted bariatric surgery, supported by a dedicated Follow Up Care Program that includes multidisciplinary support.

Bariatric surgery can be life-changing as it can improve both physical health and overall quality of life. Below, we’ve answered some of the most common questions about bariatric surgery.

FAQs

  • Who is eligible for bariatric surgery?

Bariatric surgery may be an option for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40, or over 35 with weight-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea.

Each patient is assessed individually by our multidisciplinary team to ensure surgery is the right choice for their long-term health and wellbeing.

  • Is bariatric surgery covered by insurance?

Many Irish health insurance providers cover bariatric (weight loss) surgery once certain medical criteria are met.

To learn more about your cover, contact our Beacon Bariatric & Obesity Centre team, who can guide you through the process.

  • Do I need a referral for bariatric surgery?

You can be referred to Beacon Bariatric & Obesity Centre by your GP or another healthcare professional.

Self-referrals are also welcome and our team will guide you through an initial consultation and assessment process. Visit our Contact Us page for details.

  • What does the pre-surgery assessment involve?

Before surgery, you’ll meet with our multidisciplinary team, including a consultant surgeon, dietitian and nurse specialist. This helps us ensure surgery is safe, appropriate, and tailored to your needs.

About Surgery

  • How long will I stay in hospital?

Most patients stay two to three nights at Beacon Hospital following surgery.

Recovery at home typically takes two to three weeks, depending on your procedure and overall health. Our team will support to ensure a smooth and safe recovery.

  • Will I need to follow a special diet?

Yes. A tailored diet plan is an essential part of recovery and long-term success.

You’ll begin with a liquid diet, progressing to soft foods and then to a balanced, healthy diet.

Our specialist dietitians will work closely with you at each stage of your recovery, providing guidance and support to help you adjust and maintain healthy habits for life.

  • Is bariatric surgery safe?

At Beacon Bariatric & Obesity Centre, your safety is our highest priority.

All procedures are carried out by experienced bariatric surgeons using state-of-the-art robotic surgical technology in one of Ireland’s most advanced hospitals, Beacon Hospital.

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks, which your consultant will discuss with you in detail as part of your pre-operative assessment.

  • How much weight can I expect to lose?

Most patients lose 60–70% of their excess body weight within one to two years of surgery.

Results vary depending on the type of procedure, commitment to aftercare, and lifestyle changes.

Our team will work with you to help you achieve the best possible results for your long-term health.

After Surgery & Recovery

  • What kind of support will I receive after my surgery?

Our dedicated team provides an ongoing Follow Up Care Program, including dietary guidance, physical activity/exercise plans, and review appointments to help you achieve lasting results.

  • Will I have excess skin after weight loss?

This varies from person to person. Our surgeons can discuss possible next steps, including reconstructive options, once your weight stabilises.

  • Can the weight come back after surgery?

Long-term success depends on maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, and follow-up appointments. Our multidisciplinary approach is designed to help you maintain your results.
