At Beacon Hospital’s Obesity & Bariatric Centre, we offer a comprehensive, professional and patient-centred service to patients living with obesity. Who is the Service for?
This service is may be suitable for patients who:
- Have a BMI of 35 or above
- Are living with obesity-related health conditions
- Are seeking evidence-based support for long-term weight management
- Are interested in medical or surgical treatment

Treatment Options
There are two different routes available to patients. These are medical weight management and bariatric surgical options. Your team will discuss your individual needs and will be best placed to advise on the method that is best suited to you personally.
Medical Weight Management:

- GLP-1 medications
GLP-1 medications support weight loss by reducing appetite, increasing fullness and helping to regulate blood sugar. These treatments are prescribed following specialist assessment and you will be monitored by our team whilst using them.

Multidiscliplinary Team
Led by Mr William Robb, Consultant Upper GI & Bariatric Surgeon, Beacon Obesity and Bariatric Centre uses a unique multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach to ensure our patients are meticulously cared for and supported from the moment they enter our care and right throughout their journey.
Specialists on our MDT include; Consultant Bariatric Surgeons – Mr William Robb & Mr Waqas Butt, obesity medicine specialists, dietitians, clinical nurse specialists, endocrinologists and psychological support where appropriate.

Health Insurance
Most private health insurance policies cover bariatric surgery where patients have a BMI of 40, or a BMI of 35 and a weight-related health condition. Qualifying conditions include Type II Diabetes, Sleep Apnoea and more.

Who is eligible for bariatric surgery?
Bariatric surgery may be an option for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40, or over 35 with weight-related health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea.
Each patient is assessed individually by our multidisciplinary team to ensure surgery is the right choice for their long-term health and wellbeing.

Is bariatric surgery covered by health insurance?
Many Irish health insurance providers cover bariatric (weight loss) surgery once certain medical criteria are met.

Do I need a referral for bariatric surgery?
No referral is required. However, you may be referred to Beacon Bariatric & Obesity Centre by your GP or another healthcare professional.

What does the pre-surgery assessment involve?
Before surgery, you’ll meet with our multidisciplinary team, including a consultant surgeon, dietitian and nurse specialist. This helps us ensure surgery is safe, appropriate, and tailored to your needs.

How long will I stay in hospital?
Most patients stay two to three nights at Beacon Hospital following surgery. This can vary on an individual basis and your surgeon will advise you on based on your requirements.
Recovery at home typically takes two to three weeks, depending on your procedure and overall health. Our team will support to ensure a smooth and safe recovery.

Will I need to follow a special diet?
Yes. A tailored diet plan is an essential part of recovery and long-term success.
You’ll begin with a liquid diet, progressing to soft foods and then to a balanced, healthy diet.
