Education & Training

Dr Cora Doherty is a leading Neonatologist with extensive experience in major teaching hospitals across the UK and Ireland, and a recognised national leader in perinatal patient safety and quality improvement. Dr Doherty spent over two decades as a consultant at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, returning to Ireland in 2025 to work jointly across Children’s Health Ireland (Crumlin and Temple Street) and The Coombe Hospital. She is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at Trinity College Dublin.

Dr Doherty trained in Dublin, King’s College and University College Hospitals, London, Oxford and Cambridge. She was awarded a Medical Research Council (MRC) Clinical Training Fellowship at the University of Cambridge, researching early life nutritional programming of adult disease, work that underpins her ongoing interest in mothers’ and infants’ nutrition. She is dual trained in paediatrics.

Experience

Dr Cora Doherty has particular clinical expertise in growth, nutrition and breastfeeding, (currently completing certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)). In Cardiff she raised exclusive breastfeeding rates from 30% to 71%, and developed several national frameworks, including two British Association of Perinatal Medicine Maternal Breast Milk Toolkits and the UK Lactation and Loss Framework, alongside Breastfeeding Lead for the All-Wales Maternity and Neonatal Network.

Other national experience includes National Clinical Lead for Wales’s Maternity and Neonatal Safety Support Programme. In 2022 she received a prestigious UK National Clinical Impact Award.

Recent colleague feedback describes her as ‘inspirational’, ‘an excellent clinician’ and ‘extremely articulate and clear thinking’, and her most recent parent feedback returned the highest scores across all domains (over 60 families).
