Training:

Dr Shanahan qualified from University College Dublin in 1993 and obtained his MRCPI in 1997. He went on to train in neurology in both Ireland and London, at Chelsea and Westminster and St George’s Hospitals and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. He completed specialist training in Neurology in 2007.

Experience:

From 2007 until 2024, Dr Shanahan worked as a Consultant Neurologist with the Headache Group at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, treating thousands of patients with complex headache disorders, and was involved in establishing specialist services for Botox, cranial nerve blocks and CGRP antibody treatments. He co-authored the Headache chapter of the Queen Square textbook of neurology (second and third editions), and was an invited expert for the NICE assessments of Botox and Erenumab for migraine treatment. He returned to Dublin in 2024 to establish a headache clinic at Beacon Hospital.
