Mr Muhammad Aakif Khan is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Beacon Hospital, specialising in minimally invasive and robotic colorectal surgery. He has a particular interest in robotic techniques for bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and complex diverticular disease, as well as advanced proctology and hernia surgery.
Training & Education
Mr Aakif completed his medical degree and surgical training through the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. He then continued his training under the CPSP–RCSI programme in Ireland, followed by higher surgical training at St Luke’s General Hospital and Cork University Hospital.
He subsequently undertook a Fellowship in Robotic Colorectal Surgery at Colchester Hospital in the UK, through the prestigious ICENI Centre Fellowship Programme. Mr Aakif holds fellowship qualifications from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the European Board of Coloproctology.
Experience
Mr Aakif previously worked as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at James Paget University Hospital in the UK, before returning to Ireland in 2024 to join Beaumont Hospital, where he successfully established and now leads a robotic colorectal surgery programme.
His clinical practice covers a broad range of colorectal and general surgical procedures, with a strong focus on robotic and laparoscopic techniques to enhance recovery and reduce surgical trauma. His subspecialist interests include:
- Robotic colorectal resections for bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), and complex diverticular disease (including strictures, colo-vesical fistula, and rectal prolapse repairs)
- Proctology procedures, including haemorrhoid surgery (HALO), fissure and fistula repair, and pilonidal sinus surgery
- Robotic and laparoscopic hernia surgery, including parastomal, incisional, and abdominal wall reconstructions
- Laparoscopic gallbladder surgery
In addition to his clinical roles, Mr Aakif is a JAG-accredited colonoscopy trainer and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He is also an active participant in the ColoRobotica Programme, a pan-European initiative focused on excellence and innovation in robotic colorectal surgery and training.
Mr Aakif is a member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland (ACPGBI), the European Society of Coloproctology, and the Surgical Oncology Society of Pakistan.
Mr Aakif is passionate about using robotic technology to advance surgical care, improving patient outcomes through reduced pain, faster recovery, and minimally invasive techniques.
