Training & Experience:
Dr Karl Hazel is currently a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Beacon Hospital and has a special interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Bowel Ultrasound.
He graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 2009 with a degree in Biochemistry and Structural Biology and subsequently obtained his Medical Degree (MB BCh BAO) from University College Dublin in 2014. He was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland in 2016.
Following completion of Higher Specialist Training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Ireland, he completed an Advanced Clinical Fellowship in Inflammatory Bowel Disease in University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, Birmingham, United Kingdom. His subspecialty interests are Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Bowel Ultrasound, Bile Acid Metabolism and PSC-IBD. He holds a Medical Doctorate (MD) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, examining the effects of Bile Acids on Inflammation and Fibrosis in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and is an active member of the Irish Society of Gastroenterology and ECCO.
Dr Hazel also sits on the IBD Working Group for the National Clinical Programme for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Ireland and continues to be active in IBD research in Ireland, with multiple peer reviewed publications, presentations and abstract publications. He is currently part of the Working Group formulating the updated European Crohn’s and Colitis Guidelines for the management of Ulcerative Colitis.
