Professor John Reynolds is a Consultant General Surgeon at Beacon Hospital, Dublin. He specialises in diseases of the oesophagus and stomach and is recognised as a leading expert with over 30 years of clinical and academic experience.
Training
Professor Reynolds graduated from Trinity College Dublin (TCD) before undertaking advanced surgical fellowships in the United States. He completed a Research Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia from 1986 to 1988, and a Clinical Fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York from 1993 to 1994.
Experience
Professor Reynolds was appointed Senior Lecturer and Consultant Surgeon at St. James’s University Hospital in Leeds, UK, from 1994 until 1996, when he returned to Dublin to join St. James’s Hospital and Trinity College Dublin.
He served as Academic Head of the Department of Clinical Surgery at St James’s Hospital and TCD from 2001 until April 2025 and is Emeritus Professor of Trinity College Dublin. Professor Reynolds also held leadership roles including Cancer Lead at the Trinity St James’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre, and National Lead in Ireland for oesophageal and stomach cancer.
On an international level, Professor Reynolds is a Council Member of the International Society for Diseases of the Oesophagus, and previously served as President of the European Society of Diseases of the Oesophagus (2021–2024) and President of the Irish Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (2010–2024).
He has led numerous international research collaborations and clinical trials, received multiple research awards and grants, and is the author of over 500 peer-reviewed publications, most of which focus on oesophageal and gastric disease.
