Fardod O’Kelly graduated with an honours degree in medicine and a Bachelors degree in medical science from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) in 2007 following undergraduate Bachelors and Masters degrees in natural sciences (Biochemistry) from Trinity College Dublin.

He returned to Trinity in 2010 to undertake a Doctorate in Medicine in the field of prostate cancer epigenetics, and was subsequently appointed to the higher surgical training scheme in urology. Following his attainment of FRCS(Urol), he pursued sub-specialist training in paediatric and adolescent urology in Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin before being awarded the prestigious Colles medal by the RCSI for further subspecialty fellowship training as well as being a recipient of RCSI and Ethicon travel awards.

He completed highly sought-after clinical fellowships in paediatric and adolescent urology in Canada at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) in Ottawa, and at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, where he dealt with high volume upper and lower tract reconstruction, renal tumours, stone disease, renal transplantation, functional urology and neurogenic disorders, before returning to Ireland with his family.

Fardod has a strong academic and education background. He has written over 60 peer-reviewed academic manuscripts, 8 book chapters, and is a reviewer for over 15 journals as well as being awarded a global Top-10 reviewer for the Journal of Pediatric Urology (2020).

He was also awarded a teaching medal by UCD for undergraduate education. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard Business School, and was awarded a scholarship to study for an MBA in Smurfit Business School at UCD, Dublin. Fardod has set up and is involved in a number of international clinical research and educational collaborations, has created a paediatric urology podcast show (Circumsessions) in conjunction with the Journal for Pediatric Urology, and sits on the paediatric urology working group of the European Association of Urology. He lives in Dublin with his wife, and 3 boys, and enjoys rugby, history, and cooking.

Mr Brice Antao

Mr Brice Antao MBBS MRCSEd FRCSEd (Paed.Surg), Consultant Paediatric Surgeon

Mr Brice Antao qualified as a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon in the UK in 2011. He brings unique expertise in “key-hole” minimally invasive surgery for children to Ireland. Mr Antao trained in world–leading paediatric surgical centres including Great Ormond Street Hospital and King’s College Hospital, London. He obtained the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh fellowship to undertake further training in minimally invasive and robotic surgery for children at Blank Children’s Hospital, Iowa, USA.

Prior to joining Beacon Hospital for Kids, Mr Antao worked as a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin for 5 years. He brings with him pioneering surgical techniques combining cutting-edge surgical technology with evidence-based medicine, to provide the highest standard of care for all his patients.

Mr Antao manages all common general paediatric and neonatal surgical problems. He has specialist expertise in gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, thoracic, minimally invasive (laparoscopic), robotic surgery and surgical oncology.

Furthermore, Mr Antao has an excellent research profile having published 2 books, 24 book chapters, 36 peer-reviewed journal articles and over 60 presentations at international scientific meetings. Mr Antao believes strongly in keeping abreast with new innovations and technology that improve clinical care and works actively in national and international research and clinical collaborations. As a result, he was the first to introduce, non-surgical therapies such as vacuum bell therapy and pectus bracing for the management of chest wall deformities for children in Ireland.

The common referrals to Mr Antao are: foreskin disorders, umbilical disorders, hernia, hydrocele, varicocele, undescended testes, tongue tie, ingrown toe nails, congenital cysts, skin and soft tissue lesions, abdominal pain, bed wetting, bowel disorders, constipation, liver, spleen and gall bladder disorders, congenital chest wall deformities, palmar hyperhidrosis, gastroesophageal reflux, diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, feeding difficulties requiring percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomies (PEG) and  vascular access.

Mr Michael Mara

Mr. Michael L. Mara BA MD FRCSI FAAOS Consultant Orthopaedic and Hand Surgeon, specializing in advanced reconstructive surgery of the upper extremity, and upper and lower extremity trauma.

Mr. Mara completed his orthopaedic specialty training in the U.S. in 1995, studying under renowned reconstructive hand surgeon Mr. Alfred B. Swanson.  In 2001, he completed advanced fellowship training in surgery of the hand, including microvascular, paediatric, congenital, and adult reconstruction.  Mr. Mara is a member of the Irish Hand Surgery Society, The British Society for Surgery of The Hand, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is a certified specialist of the Joint Committee on Surgery of the Hand of the American Boards of Orthopaedic and Plastic Surgery.

At Beacon Hospital, Mr. Mara specializes in all aspects of upper extremity surgery, including shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand conditions.  He emphasizes minimally invasive “keyhole” surgery for shoulder and elbow pain, carpal tunnel syndrome and Dupuytren’s disease, as well as arthritis of the hand and wrist.

Mr. Mara also serves on the trauma team, providing fracture care aimed at rapid recovery to sports and daily activities.

Prof Prem Puri

Professor Prem Puri is the Newman Clinical Research Professor at the UCD School of Medicine and Medical Science, and President of the National Children’s Research Centre at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital. He is currently President of the World Federation of Associations of Paediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS) FOUNDATION, and Past President of the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgeons (WOFAPS), and Past President of the European Paediatric Surgeons Association (EUPSA). He is Editor-in-Chief of Paediatric Surgery International, and also on the Editorial Board of several other journals. He is a member of the Health Research Board of Ireland. Prof. Puri is Honorary Fellow of a number of prestigious medical and scientific societies, including the American Surgical Association (ASA), American Academy of Paediatrics, American Paediatric Surgical Association, Japanese Association of Paediatric Surgeons, and also Argentinean, Austrian, Canadian, Czech, Croatian, Cuban, Indian and South African and Ukranian paediatric surgical associations.

Prof. Puri is known internationally for his research into underlying mechanisms causing birth defects, and innovative treatments, which have benefited children all over the world. He is a multi award-winning researcher whose previous awards include People of the Years Award in Ireland and the prestigious Denis Browne Gold Medal by the British Association of Paediatric Surgeons for outstanding contribution to paediatric surgery. He has been a visiting professor to many leading universities all over the world, and invited speaker to numerous international scientific meetings. He has published 10 books, 127 chapters in textbooks and over 500 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
