Physiotherapy Class: Back to Fitness

Beacon Hospitals Back to Fitness programs are gym-based programs which have been specially designed for patients who have undergone joint replacement surgeries such as total hip and total knee joint replacements.

Beacon Hospitals Back to Fitness programs are gym-based programs which have been specially designed for patients who have undergone joint replacement surgeries such as total hip and total knee replacements. This class is available to patients who are two weeks post-surgery.

Our class schedule will run over a six-week period. Patients are required to attend a weekly one-hour group session with our Chartered Orthopaedic Physiotherapy team.

Patients often acknowledge not only the physical benefit of the Back to Fitness class, but also the psychological. As this is a small group class, patients are put into a group with other who have undergone a similar procedure. The result is an incredible atmosphere of understanding, support and motivation. Some of our patients have even made friends for life during their Back to Fitness classes!

As  part of this class, each participant’s progress will be tracked weekly. Feedback and encouragement will be on hand to all who attend. At the end of the course, a scheduled consultation with the GP or consultant will take place.

Class Set-Up:

The classes are carried out in the Physiotherapy Gym and consist of a circuit-based routine, alternating between 8-10 moving stations. Each station focuses on progressing strength and range of movement, progressing mobility and aiming to return you to a good level of pain free-function.

Though the classes are group based, they are modified to suit each individual’s ability. There will be a Physiotherapist present at all times, creating a supportive, encouraging and positive environment for all participants.

In addition to this, all patient’s will be provided with a home exercise programme. These programs will be tailored to each patient’s ability and modified to incorporate their progress according to their operative status and mobility levels. This service also includes an exercise diary, which encourages patients to record their own progression and rehabilitation plans from home.
