Falls Prevention Programme Class

The Falls Prevention Programme is a multi-disciplinary based educational and exercise programme which aims to reduce and prevent falls occurrences in the home and community. The programme is open to any individual who is identified as being at risk of falls and meets the specific inclusion criteria outlined for the programme. Referrals for the programme can be made through your consultant and/or GP, medical team, physiotherapist and occupational therapist. The programme is run once a week for 6 weeks and each session comprises of educational and exercise components. Each session will take approx. 75minutes (30 minute educational session; 45 minute exercise session). The programme will focus on identification of preventative measures which aim to decrease your risk of falls. Furthermore the programme aims to;

  1. Allow you to appraise your level of falls risk – awareness of your risk factors is essential for this
  2. Provide a forum for developing knowledge about specific safety practices in relation to falls prevention
  3. Enable you to take control, explore different coping behaviours and encourage follow through of safety strategies in everyday life

Educational sessions are facilitated by Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Dietetics and Pharmacy and will cover topics such as;

  • Benefits of and appropriate pacing of exercise
  • Identifying intrinsic and extrinsic risk factors which can increase your falls risk
  • Development of a ‘falls action plan’
  • Environmental issues in the home and community and identification of assistive aids for use in the home to increase safety and support falls’ prevention.
  • Medication and its role in falls prevention
  • Importance of nutrition and hydration to support falls’ prevention.
