Training:

Dr McCaffrey graduated in medicine from Trinity College Dublin in 1989 and obtained Membership of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (MRCPI) in 1994. He emigrated to Sydney, Australia to pursue a career in Cardiology and Heart Transplantation in 1996 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRCAP) in 1998.

Experience:

Dr McCaffrey worked as a Consultant Cardiologist in St Vincent’s Heart Transplant Unit in Sydney, Australia and was an investigator in the large beta blocker heart failure trials of that era as well as pulmonary hypertension studies. He returned to Ireland in 2006 with his international heart failure experience. He was a consultant in St Vincent’s University hospital until 2009 when he moved to Beacon Hospital to set up their Heart Failure service.

He is Chair of the Heart Failure Council with the Irish Heart Foundation. He is also Director of the Cardiac Rehabilitation service in Beacon hospital. Dr McCaffrey has published papers on Heart Failure in major cardiology Journals including Heart, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) , Journal of Heart Lung Transplantation and the European Journal of Heart Failure.
